On the way back home from work Alyssa wasn’t too stoked about the new iPhone. She compared it to not having the same effect as the fuzzy feeling gained when receiving jewelery – some women are hard to please I guess! On the flip side, I received an SMS message from her this morning

Google Calendar is also included and doesn’t need any software installed on your device, instead, it uses the synchronization protocols that are already built in – the MS Exchange server protocols.

In /etc/apache2/sites-available/ you list all the configuration files for your websites. In /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ you make a symlink to the sites in /sites-available/

Sounds straight forward:

ln -s /etc/apache2/sites-available/www.domain.com .

So now if you want to deactivate a site simply remove the symlink. I made the mistake this morning of performing this command inside the /sites-enabled/ directory:

cp domain-config domain-config.0001

This was using the symlink to the file in the /sites-available/ and copying it to domain-config.0001. MUY Stupido but that said I don’t know how it screwed up the logging…

Lesson learned and everythings hunky dory again.

• Ad Server development – running locally, serving file from localhost, developing plugins and skins.
• WordPress development – again, running locally and being served from localhost, making/changing/hacking plugins and themes.
• We site development – you guessed it, it’s running locally using PHP and screwing with/tweaking Apacge.

I’m about to tell you the secret – I’m using MAMP. It’s a little like a LAMP except it’s a Mac which in itself is part of the UNIX operating system family with a hybrid kernel type. So Mac + Apache + MySQL + PHP = MAMP. It’s pretty awesome. It has configurable ports, PHP version 4 or 5 availability, Zend Optimizer availability and two choices of PHP accelerator (XCache or eAccellerator).

If you tinker with Macs have a peek at MAMP.

Then type this to restart the dock:

to revert type:

Funny insert: I kept messing it up (typing in the dark in bed) by typing “killall Dick” – Ouch!

Sidenote, I am still having issues with referring to it as “OpenX” as opposed to “Openads”. Heck, I only just got used to “Openads” over “phpAdsNew”!

My next portable will be a MacBook. I was researching which one I should get and it was down to the MacBook (White/Black) or the MacBook Pro.One thing I found funny was that Apple charge more money just for the black MacBook. Is this racist? Again, go back to those prices… Why is the white $118 cheaper than the black MacBook, or even, why is the black MacBook $118 MORE expensive? Strange… I would have bought a white MacBook anyway.

Dave brings up a good point that many good people leave community built and inspired projects (like WordPress) because of peer flaming and being shot down by people who have “been around longer”. I like the term “Founder’s Syndrome” – I know all too well about this theory and I can definitely relate to the roles that are played from both ends of the stick. I’ve been the Founder and wielded the mighty Stick of Doom and been the lowly mortal who suffered at the hands of another Immortal’s G-dly stick (sounds kinky).

Anyway, building a project and growing a project in a community means that there should be no room for condescending remarks on tester lists and there should definitely be a feeling that that community fosters newbies. More often than not people learn by their mistakes and screw things up, change their email and start fresh because now they know better.

I would like to rant on about this all morning but I have to do some work.

This dude claims to be able to have a software version of the unlock in a week. If so I’m gonna say bye bye Rogers and get an iPhone.

I have to use a glass plate to have the notebook on my laptop or else the CPU or video processor overheats and the screen goes nuts. Modern computing is a nightmare.

We are aware of this problem but unfortunatley don’t yet have a fix for
it. We have the z-index pretty high to deal with most of these problems
but Flash is what causes this problem in particular.

Researchers at UC Davis have discovered microbes that can quite literally help the process of rock forming by converting lose sediment into the hard stuff. Although only tested on a lab scale, Bacillus Pasteurii, could be the answer to soil liquefaction caused my earthquakes.

It is suggested that the majority of the destruction from a Vancouver Earthquake could come in the form of mass movement or soil/earth liquefaction, a process where soft deposits such as clay, are converted to a jellylike state by severe shaking causing a situation where structures (buildings) could sink and collapse. A quake registering 7.3 on the Richter scale was last experienced way back in 1946. A quake of 7.3 is classified as “major” on the Richter scale and can cause serious damage over larger areas. One thing we have to remember is that construction and infrastructure standards have come a long way so I wonder if these scales of magnitude (like Richter or Mercalli) actually take into consideration these new developments? The Richer scale was developed in 1935 and Mercalli in 1902, surely this needs updated? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I wish a scientist or geologist would comment on this blog because a lot of people have emailed me and asked me about this. Read the other article.

Sidenote: I am still ruling at foosball in the office. We are currently interviewing for two positions here and any newcomers are going to be looked upon as potential rivals. I am worried because I am only defeated reliably by Quebecer’s. Luckily we’re based in BC, however we do risk being hit by earthquakes.

I think I should buy everyone at work a copy of Zen and the Art of Foosball: A Beginner’s Guide to Table Soccer from Amazon. Oh yeah, check the lil picture to the left :) I really am a previous foosball champion (thanks to Andy for the scan). Don’t hate me because I am good at foosball.

The Juan de Fuca plate is being forced under the North American plate creating a “subduction zone”. This subduction has formed a lot of magnificent mountain areas in the Cascade Volcanic Belt (where volcanic mountains have formed that are not all within the Cascade Range). The movement of one plate beneath each other is never a smooth process and they tend to lock up until it reaches a point where there is so much pressure and stress that it violently moves. It is this mass movement that causes an earthquake.

I can see Mount Baker from my window but there are many other mountains that you may have heard about in and around Vancouver, BC such as:

• Devastator Peak
• Mount Fee
• Black Tusk
• Cinder Cone
• Opal Cone
• Mount Garibaldi
• Watts Point

Baker incidentally still shows steam/fume activity from it’s crate but is considered dormant, but wait, didn’t they say that about Mount St. Helens which erupted famously in 1980?

I don’t think we’re going to die but if we were living on Vancouver Island I would be worried, as Vancouver Island is a direct formation resulting from plate tectonic activity. Stop worrying Alyssa! Good reads for this include Global Tectonics and Earth as an Evolving Planetary System. (I believe the latter was on my course reading list at school).
